High Intensity Discharge (HID) Lighting

     High-intensity discharge (HID) lighting is probably the most popular type of lighting for indoor gardening. The high intensity it gives off leads to vigorous growth but also generates a significant amount of heat. Due to this, controlling the temperature in your grow space may be a challenge.

 

     When gardening indoors, growers often use two different HID lamps (often referred to as bulbs) - Metal Halide (MH) and High Pressure Sodium (HPS). While you can technically use either type of HID lamp throughout your grow, it is best to use MH during the vegetative stage of growth and HPS for the flowering stage. The reasons why involve the types of light emitted by the lamps and the types of light the plant thrives on during the different stages.
 

  • MH bulbs provide more light in the blue spectrum, which promotes vigorous plant growth. This is why it is best suited for the vegetation stage.

  • HPS bulbs provide more red spectrum lighting (they put off an orange glow when lit), which is best for the flowering stages of growth.

The three most common types of HID reflectors.

     The MH/HPS lamp is held in a reflector. The reflector helps focus and spread the light from the lamp down onto your plants. Some styles even connect to your ventilation system to help keep the lamp cool. There are several types of reflectors that you can choose from. The three most popular reflectors are: wing reflectors, cool-tube reflectors, and air-cooled reflectors.

     Wing Reflectors are simple and inexpensive, but lack significant cooling capabilities. The major plus side to using a wing reflector, however, is that you do not lose any light intensity as you would to the glass of a cool tube or air-cooled reflector. 

     Cool Tube Reflectors have cooling capabilities, but don't do the best job of effectively reflecting and focusing the light downward onto your plants - since their reflectors are often quite small. When the cool tube is connected to the ventilation system, air passes over the bulb and helps keep it cool while pushing the warm air out through the exhaust.

     Air-Cooled Hoods are the best reflector hoods for most grow setups. They are the best for controlling the temperature and keeping the top of your plants (the canopy) from getting too hot from being near the bulb. They are also quite good at focusing the light down onto your grow space. Air-Cooled Hoods have a piece of glass on the bottom to help contain the heat generated from the bulb inside the hood. The heat is then exhausted out of the grow space when hooked up to your ventilation system. This same piece of glass also allows your plants to be closer to the bulb than they would be able to without the glass barrier. This same barrier also causes a slight drop in light intensity, but the positives outweigh the negatives for most growers. Keeping temperature down within the range best for growing plants can be a challenge (especially in the warmer months). Air-cooled reflectors are a huge help in that regard. 
 

     When selecting a reflector hood that can be connected to your ventilation system, it is important to make sure the diameter of the openings on your reflector match up with the diameter of the ducting you are using to exhaust your grow area.

     The MH/HPS lamp is powered by a ballast. The ballast regulates the current to the lamp and provides sufficient voltage to start the lamp. Many ballasts used by growers today are of the electronic variety. Electronic ballasts are nearly silent (minus an internal fan that many units have) and they run cooler than their magnetic counterparts. Additionally, they support both types of HID bulbs and many even have an adjustable wattage/dimmer setting so you can adjust the amount of light your plants are receiving.


*NOTE*: It is important when using the dimmer function to use the correct bulb with the setting you choose. For example, if you are going to run a 600w dimmable ballast at 400w, you must use a 400w bulb while doing so. The spectrum of lighting will be different if a 600w bulb is only run at 400w. Be very careful to also never run your ballast at a rating higher than the bulb can handle. 

     This dimming feature comes in handy because you can buy a more powerful, dimmable ballast up front and simply turn it down to the amount of watts specified by your bulb. Later, if you decide you want to increase the amount of light in your grow space (pushing for better yields or upgrading your grow space size), you can simply purchase a new bulb and set the ballast to a higher setting instead of purchasing a whole new ballast.

Ceramic Metal Halide (CMH) Lighting

     Ceramic Metal Halide (CMH) lighting is a form of HID lighting that has a wider spectrum than other HID lamps. CMH lamps are made with an arc tube constructed of a ceramic composite instead of quartz (like MH lamps are made of). This ceramic within the arc tube allows the tube to reach a higher temperature. The higher operating temperature of the ceramic tube allows for an ideal mixture of gases which creates a fuller spectrum of light that increases the growth and overall health of your plants. The light spectrum that CMH lighting give off also include ultraviolet and infrared rays. The fuller spectrum of light can lead to a higher yield than a regular MH/HPS HID setup can produce.

 

     High-frequency digital ballasts are not compatible with CMH lamps, therefore, a special ballast is needed for ceramic metal halide (CMH) grow lights. The lamps come in two versions - a full spectrum 3100 Kelvins and a blue spectrum 4200 Kelvins. Manufacturers state that you will only need to replace CMH lamps every two years.

Light-Emitting Diode (LED) Lighting

     LED is another choice when it comes to lighting for your plants. LED lighting is more expensive up front, but is also much more efficient than HID lighting. LED grow lights don't require a ballast and can simply be plugged into a standard outlet then turned on for use. Many LED grow lights come equipped to handle both stages of growth effectively by utilizing simple switches to change from vegetative light to flowering light (some growers opt for using full spectrum lighting for both stages of growth).
 

     LED grow lights also run much cooler than their HID counterpart, but you still need to keep them some distance away from your plants because of the intensity of the light output. The light output from LED lighting is directional which means they don't require the use of reflectors. This is important to note because light does get lost each time it needs to reflect. When using HID lighting, some of the energy is lost to the reflector during each reflection since HIDs are not directional.

     LED grow lights also last much longer than their HID counterpart. It is common to see LED grow lights with a lifespan between 50,000-100,000 hours. Because of their superior efficiency, LED grow lights are also much cheaper to run than HID lighting. Between the energy efficiency, the lack of needing to cool the lights down, and the long life expectancy of LED compared to HID, many growers opt for the up front expense to save money in the long run.
